A keychain (also colloquially known as a key fob or key ring) is simply a small plastic ring or wire with several small keys attached. The longer the length of the keychain, the easier it is to access several different keys. Some key chains allow both ends of the key chain to rotate, thereby keeping the keychain in a position to prevent turning while the item being worked with is in use. However, all kinds of key chains are designed to prevent rotation, and many different designs are available.

A plastic keychain, also known as a snap-on key chain, is typically designed with one large flat surface along with a series of concave grooves, often referred to as "divert" grooves. One of the advantages of this design is that diverts to provide a secure and safe way to store many different keys without providing a weak point that can be easily turned. Another advantage of this design is that it is typically quite easy to replace the plastic portion of a keychain, replacing only the hooked grooves in the metal body of the device. A snap-on design also provides a strong and secure way to hold a key where no sharp or jagged edges may damage the plastic surface. Snap-on key chains, in particular, are commonly used on belt loops or other fastening systems to prevent accidental and unwanted pulls.

A metal keychain is also a popular choice for a keychain. Metal chains can include both interlocking and non-interlocking varieties, allowing a person to choose which variety best suits his or her needs. Non-interlocking chains often come equipped with a zipper located at the very end, allowing for easy attachment to a pocket or other form of popular hanging accessory. This zipper-style feature is perfect for keys and other small items that tend to get lost in bags or pockets.
