Sports Medal

Medals are often handed out by sports organizations or government organizations as a sign of appreciation. Medals are also considered an achievement award given to deserving individuals. A medal will usually contain the name of the individual who has won it along with the years in which they have competed in the sports meet. Medals are very common awards given to athletes in various sporting events. Medals are also given to members of the armed forces for any occasion that includes participation in battle.

In the early to mid 19th century, medals were given for almost every prestigious event including rowing, sailing, track and field, hockey, swimming and basketball. From then on, with the growing popularity of sports and athletic events, medals began to be used for different types of decorations. Initially, medal decorations such as medals, golden medals and silver medals became symbols of prestige but later on, since most people did not carry medals around in their pockets, medals became more practical for everyday use and were eventually introduced to the world of competitive sports.

Medals are mostly worn on left arms, on the inside of the wrist and on the back of the neck. Since medals may also contain monetary value, sometimes a medal will be encased in a trophy case. Sometimes, medals may be worn on buttons or fasteners attached to the clothing. Some people still wear medals even today although wearing a medal is considered a form of prejudice against those who have not won a medal. Some Olympic and professional wrestling organizations have added extra fees to the prize money to discourage the practice of collecting medals.
